Chicago Afrobeat Project

$5 General Admission - In the Music Hall

As afrobeat infects across the globe, Chicago Afrobeat Project remains at the forefront of the Amercian afrobeat movement. The 7-10 piece collective performs an energized interpretation of music pioneered by Nigerian activist Fela Kuti. Their stew of funk, jazz and rock make crowds dance in minutes. Chicago Afrobeat Project's repertoire consists predominantly of original afrobeat music with unique cover selections. The group has been known to slip in an afrobeat version of Fugazi's "Waiting Room" or slide up the energy level on Fela's "Just Like That" by pulling melodic and rhythmic lines from Radiohead’s "I Might Be Wrong." This past summer, the group performed on multiple occasions with Bill Kreutzman, renowned drummer for the Grateful Dead, and is now currently working on a new album featuring afrobeat versions of songs from The Talking Heads, Led Zepplin, Ceu, Ken Vandermark and other artists.
